Are you easily digitally distracted? I am. While sitting recently with a friend watching one of our favorite shows I noticed that we both were not fulling engaged in any one task. What used to be a fun time chatting and laughing about what we both were watching together we were engaged in digital distractions.
1. A contest was being entered on an iPAD.
2. An iPHONE was using fingerprint technology to get minute to minute updates to email and texts.
3. A Pinterest account was being accessed to pin a variety of wishes, wants and oh wows.
4. A Facebook account was being scrolled through for the daily gossip of people I barely know anymore.
5. Candy was being Crushed on not one but 3 iPADs
6. Two tweets flew out.
7. I Stumbled Upon a few funnies.
8. My friend LinkedIN to a good article.
9. There was Sharing but not between the two people in the room.
10. We gave a few thumbs up and Liked things other than the TV show we were watching.
WAIT…..What show was I watching? Who am I sitting with….A real friend or a computer “friend” When the show was over did we really know what we had seen or had we been too digitally distracted from comprehending anything. Hmmm maybe I need an intervention here.
Let me think about some recent stats about our digitally distracted world.
- 91% of all people on earth have a mobile phone.
- 56% of people own a smart phone.
- 50% of mobile phone users, use mobile as their primary Internet source.
- 80% of time on mobile is spent inside apps.
- 72% of tablet owners purchase online from their tablets each week.
- 80% of smartphone owners and 81% of tablet owners use their devices in front of the television.
- 44% of cell phone users have slept with their cell phone by their side so that they do not miss an important text, IM call or notification.Sounds like I am part of this movement but that means I am not moving as much. Why are we so afraid to disconnect to connect more. Tonight I am going to turn off and turn on my real connections. Maybe a good game of cards or a face-to-face conversation.
Perhaps we need to play TAG instead of #HashTag. What do you think?
